Instagram Story Downloader

Download a public Instagram Story by pasting its link while it is still publicly available. Expired Stories cannot be recovered.

What is the Stories downloader?

Instagram Stories appear at the top of a profile and typically disappear after around 24 hours. SaveThisIG can download a Story only while it is still publicly accessible at the moment you paste its link.

Because Stories are temporary, they are not cached or stored anywhere after a download. If a Story has already expired, no download is possible, and this is reported clearly instead of producing an empty or broken file.

A Story link has its own shape — instagram.com/stories/username/… — which is why copying the link from inside the Story view matters. Sharing the profile address instead gives this tool nothing to work with.

Stories have their own expiry rules, and the Instagram Stories guide walks through getting the right link before the Story disappears.

How it works

  1. Copy the Instagram link from your browser or the Instagram app.
  2. Paste the link into the downloader on this page.
  3. Preview the media that is returned.
  4. Download it to your device.

Supported URL

https://www.instagram.com/stories/<username>/<id>

What is not supported

  • Stories from private accounts, and any Story that only loads after logging in. These are never accessed and no credentials are requested.
  • Close Friends stories and any other restricted audience story, which are not public content.
  • Expired Stories. Once a Story is gone it cannot be recovered, cached or reconstructed by any tool.
  • Saved or archived copies of Stories that only exist inside the app, rather than as public content.
  • Highlights. A highlight is a saved, permanent collection and has its own downloader on this site.
  • Profile links and profile-picture downloads. A bare username gives this tool no Story to retrieve.

What you can download

  • Publicly accessible Stories linked as instagram.com/stories/username/… while they are still active.
  • Both photo Stories and video Stories, each returned as its own downloadable file.
  • Links copied from the Story view in the app or from a Story's page in the browser.
  • Stories on public accounts and on accounts anyone can view without signing in.
  • A single Story per download: you get the one item the link points at, not the whole day's sequence.

What you get after downloading

  • The media file as Instagram serves it while the Story is live. There is no re-encoding, cropping or re-compression.
  • Video Stories keep their own resolution and duration, which vary from one Story to the next because each is uploaded separately.
  • The extension follows the file format for that Story, and the filename is derived from the account and post so it is identifiable later.
  • Because Stories are short-lived, the file you get is the Story as it exists now; there is no higher-quality original held on our side.
  • Downloading produces a copy only. Nothing is saved back to your Instagram account, and the Story itself is unaffected.

Why a download can fail

The Story has already expired.
This is the most common reason by a wide margin. Stories usually last about 24 hours; once gone, the media no longer exists and no tool can bring it back.
The account is private, or the Story is restricted to Close Friends.
Only public Stories can be read. There is no setting on our side that changes this, and we never ask you to log in.
You pasted the profile link rather than the Story link.
Open the Story itself and copy its own link, which contains the /stories/username/… path. A bare profile address will not work here.
The Story media link has expired.
Story links are short-lived even while the Story is visible. Copy a fresh link and paste it again straight away.
Instagram is temporarily limiting requests.
Wait about a minute and try again. When Stories expire on a fixed clock, waiting is often the only thing that matters anyway.
Instagram was slow to respond, or the download service was briefly unavailable.
Retry the same link once. Because of the expiry window, retrying quickly is worthwhile rather than waiting hours.

Troubleshooting

  • Check whether the Story is still visible in the Instagram app right now. If it has gone, there is nothing to download and no retry will help.
  • Paste the Story link, not the profile link. Stories use instagram.com/stories/username/…, which is different from every other link on this site.
  • If a fresh link still fails while the Story is visible, the account may be private or the Story may be limited to Close Friends — both are outside what this tool handles.
  • Retry immediately rather than waiting: a Story you are trying to save may expire while you troubleshoot.
  • Check whether what you want is a Highlight. Saved highlights are permanent and use a different link shape and a different tool.
  • After several failures in a row, pause about a minute to let the temporary request limit clear before trying again.

Frequently asked questions

Can I download a public Instagram Story?

Yes, as long as the Story is still publicly available at the time you paste the link. Open the Story, copy its link, and act on it before it expires.

Why can't I download a Story?

The Story may already have expired, the account may be private, the link may be incorrect, or the Story may be limited to Close Friends. Each case produces its own clear message rather than a silent failure.

Can expired Stories be downloaded?

No. Once a Story expires it is no longer publicly accessible, and SaveThisIG does not attempt to recover expired or private content.

Do I need an Instagram password?

No. SaveThisIG never asks for or stores Instagram credentials. Only publicly accessible Stories are processed.

How long does a Story stay available?

Most Stories last about 24 hours from when they are posted. Some can be removed sooner by the account owner, so the earlier you copy the link, the better.

Can I download video Stories as well as photo Stories?

Yes. Both photo and video Stories are returned as downloadable files while the Story is live.

Does this work for Close Friends Stories?

No. Close Friends content is restricted to a private list and is not public, so it is not something this tool will retrieve.

What is the difference between a Story and a Highlight?

A Story is temporary and disappears in about a day. A Highlight is a saved, permanent collection of past Stories, and the highlight downloader is built for those.

Can I download all of an account's Stories at once?

No. This tool works with one Story link at a time, which is also how Instagram itself exposes them. There is no bulk profile download.

Can I download a story from a private account?

No. Private-account content is never accessed by any tool on this site, and we do not attempt to bypass account privacy.
